On 27 November 2022, following the defeat of Belgium to Morocco during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, riots[1] broke out across Belgium and the Netherlands, mainly Brussels, Antwerp, and Rotterdam.[2] As of 28 November 2022, one person reportedly suffered facial injuries,[3] 11 people have been arrested, and around 100 officers were mobilised.[4]

The initial riots were in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Dozen of rioters torched cars and overturned them. They proceeded to set electronic scooters on fire and pelted cars with bricks. Police say that one person faced facial injuries due to fireworks.[5] Reporters mentioned that there were Morocco flags at the centre of the riots.[6]
Succeeding the riots in Brussels were protests in Antwerp and Liège.[7][8]
Netherlands[edit]
Protests took place in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague.[2][9]
Reactions[edit]
The Mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, advised football fans to not go to the town center.[10] Rajae Maouane, a Belgian politician and co-president of Ecolo, wrote on Twitter that there is “no excuse for the violent behaviour of these ‘supporters’.”[11][10]
