The 2022 Tamaulipas bus crash was a road accident in Tamaulipas, Mexico on 10 September 2022. A bus collided with a double-tanker fuel truck with both vehicles burning down. As a result of the accident 20 people burned to death. The truck driver survived and is under investigation.
Background[edit]
Double-container freight trucks have been involved in multiple road disasters resulting in many deaths in Mexico. In the past, calls have been made in Mexico to ban the very heavy and unwieldy trucks as the country is lax in safety inspections and weight restrictions.[1]
Crash[edit]
The bus departed from Hidalgo and went to Monterrey. The bus picked up people along the route. Before sunrise, at the highway to Monterrey in the northeast state Tamaulipas, the bus collided with a truck towing two tank trailers behind each other. Both vehicles burned down. Photos of the police shows that the bus was after burning down only a tangle of smoking, charred metal.[2]
According to the state prosecutors a possibility of the crash is that "one of the fuel tanks came loose".[3]
Causalities[edit]
The total number of people that were on the bus is not clear.[4] Initially there were concerns that the victims were migrant laborers, but this was contradicted by the state government of Hidalgo.[4]
Initial reports of stated that nine people died in the crash.[4] The people were burned. It was also states the number of deaths could increase to 20 people.[5] Later reports the same day states 18 deaths[1] and it was reported that as of 11 September the death toll rised to that maximum of 20 people.[3]
Of the 20 people that died as a result of the accident, 11 people were from the state Veracruz, eight people were from Hidalgo and of one person the state has not been named.[3]
At least one person survived the crash, the driver of the truck. He is under investigation.
