2023 Brasilia attack

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

On the evening of January 8, 2023, several supporters of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro attacked the Brazilian capital Brasilia. Perpetrators stormed the Congress, the Supreme Court and the Presidential Palace buildings. Mobs ransacked the government buildings and stole furniture. All the Brasilia buildings are listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.[1][2][3]

Background

During Bolsonaro’s tenure as president, his allies and supporters planned and floated the idea of an assault similar to the 2021 United States Capitol attack, especially in the event of an electoral defeat. In the 2022 presidential elections, which both Bolsonaro and former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ran as candidates, numerous incidents of political violence, police brutality and voter intimidation by supporters followed.[4] After Lula was declared winner, however, several Bolsonaro supporters protested and baselessly called the election "rigged",[5][4]
