The 2023 East Asian Baseball Cup was international baseball tournament contested by the men's national teams of WBSC Asia's member associations. It was the 13th edition of the East Asian Baseball Cup, and served as qualification to the 2023 Asian Baseball Championship.
The tournament doid not include the 4 highest ranked teams in Asia[1] (Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, and China), as it acted as qualifying for the Asian Baseball Championship, which these four teams automatically qualify for. The top two teams (The Philippines and Hong Kong) qualified for the 2023 Asian Baseball Championship in Taichung, Taiwan. [2]
The tournament was played in Bangkok, Thailand from April 29th - May 4th 2023.[2] The champions, The Philippines, won every game, scoring 86 runs and allowing only 8.
Participants[3][edit]
- Thailand (HOST)
- Hong Kong
- Philippines
Venue[3][edit]
The Queen Sirikit 60 Pansa Baseball Stadium was the only venue in the tournament. For overlapping games, a secondary field next to the stadium was used.
Format[3][edit]
The seven teams were divided into two round-robin groups of three and four. The top two teams in each group advanced to the super round, while the bottom one/two teams then played in the consolation round.
In the consolation and super rounds, teams played each team that wasn't in their original group. For instance, in the super round, team A1 played teams B1 and B2, but not A2. The standings for both the super and consolation rounds included not only the games played in those rounds, but the games played in the group stage.
The third and fourth place teams in the super round faced off in the "Bronze" game, while the first and second place teams faced off in the "Gold" game to determine the tournament champion.
The final standings table were created by combining the final round and consolation round results/standings.
