The 2023 Imola FIA Formula 3 round was a planned motor racing event scheduled to be held between 19 and 21 May 2023 at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. It was planned to be the fifth round of the 2023 FIA Formula 3 Championship, and was supposed to be held in support of the 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and the 2023 Imola Formula 2 round. However, due to the heavy flooding caused by Storm Minerva in the Emilia-Romagna region, the entire event was cancelled alongside the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and the Imola Formula 2 round;[1][2] parts of the circuit, including the paddock allocated for Formula 2 and Formula 3, were inundated by floodwaters.[3]

Report

Championship standings before the round

At the conclusion of the previous round in Melbourne, Gabriel Bortoleto leads the championship with 58 points, 20 points ahead of second-placed Grégoire Saucy who has 38 points. Saucy is 10 points ahead of 3rd and 4th-placed Dino Beganovic and Gabriele Minì, who both have 28 points, with 5th-placed Pepe Martí only behind by three points.

Rain, flooding and eventual cancellation

The Italian Protezione Civile placed the Emilia-Romagna region, where the race was supposed to be held, under a red weather alert prior to the weekend; a few days before the red alert, the same region had been affected by heavy rain, which led to floods and landslides in the area. On 17 May 2023, it was announced that the entire event – including the supporting Formula 2 and Formula 3 rounds – would be cancelled due to the adverse weather brought by Storm Minerva, the cause of the second round of flooding in the region.[2] A day before the cancellation, Formula One personnel were ordered to leave the circuit as a precautionary measure after the Santerno river saw a rapid rise in its water level.[4][5] Matteo Salvini, one of Italy's two deputy prime ministers who concurrently is the minister of transport, then requested the postponement of the race due to the unfolding situation in the surrounding areas of Imola.[6][7] Formula One then released a statement that confirmed the cancellation of the Grand Prix and its supporting Formula 2 and Formula 3 rounds.[1] It was later revealed that parts of the circuit, including the paddock used by Formula 2 and Formula 3, were already flooded,[3] after the Santerno river's water level rose by several meters from 16–17 May.
