On April 23, 2024, a Douglas C-54D operated by Alaska Air Fuel crashed into the Tanana River shortly after takeoff from Fairbanks International Airport in central Alaska. The accident occurred in the Cripple Creek area southeast of Fairbanks. Both pilots on board were killed.[1][2][3]
Aircraft[edit]
The aircraft involved was a Douglas C-54D, a variant of the DC-4, with serial number 10547 and registration N3054V, built in 1945.[4] The aircraft was owned and operated by Alaska Air Fuel.[5][1]
Accident[edit]
On April 23, 2024, at around 10 AM, a Douglas C-54D operates by Alaska Air Fuel took off from Fairbanks International Airport, Fairbanks, Alaska for a cargo flight transporting fuel to nearby cities and towns. There were only two people on board, the captain and the first officer. Shortly after takeoff, while climbing to 1500 feet, the aircraft began a descending left turn towards the Tanana River. A video taken by an eyewitness showed that one of the engines on the left side exploded, followed by the airplane entering a steep left bank less than 10 seconds later. The aircraft crashed into the Tanana River, southeast of Fairbanks International Airport, exploding into flames and killing both pilots. Troopers and firefighters were at the scene in about 15 minutes.[2][3][6]

The accident is currently being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).[7]
