On 28 October 2024, a man with a knife stabbed multiple people near a primary school in the Haidian district of Beijing, China. The alleged attacker, a 50-year-old man named Rami Tang, was arrested and is currently under investigation by the Chinese authorities.[1][2]

Background

Knife attacks in China have reportedly increased in recent years. The rise in knife attacks has been attributed to several factors such as mental health issues, social changes, and ease of accessing knives. China's strict gun control laws result in knives and homemade explosives being the most used weapons in such attacks.[3]

The attack occurred after multiple similar incidents in 2024, such as the 2024 Shenzhen stabbing and the Shanghai supermarket stabbings.

Attack

The attack happened around 3:20 p.m. near the intersection of Wanquanzhuang Road and Wanliu Zhong Road, close to Zhongguancun No. 3 Primary School.[1][4]

The attacker injured five people, three of them minors. The attacker was reportedly arrested at the scene. The injured have been reported to be in a stable condition.[5][1]

Impact

The attack has raised concerns about safety in public places in China, in relation to a recent escalation of knife attacks in China.[2]
