On July 24th, 2024, a wildfire was ignited after a lightning strike on the bank of the Clearwater River around 6:00 p.m. The Gwen Fire and River Fire were combined into one incident. The same day, US-12 was closed near the areas of Juliaetta, and Orofino.
Evacuations were issued the following days of the fire, including the towns of Juliaetta and Kendrick. Reportedly, firefighting efforts were complicated because of dry conditions, and the fuel of dead grass and steep slopes.
On July 30th, the Gwen Fire reached 10% containment, and US-12 was re-opened from Juliaetta, and Orofino.
On August 1st, the Gwen Fire reached 65% containment, allowing power to be restored for the effected area causing temporary delay in traffic on US-12.
By August 8th, the Gwen Fire containment reached 100% containment, and all potential evacuation measures were lifted.
