Meteorological synopsis

During the evening, multiple supercells over southwest Oklahoma interacted, producing unusual storm motions. NWS Norman documented five tornadoes in Kiowa and Tillman counties; one of them just north Hollister moved east, then northeast, then hooked back to the west-northwest before dissipating.[1]

Tornado

NWS survey data showed the tornado from 8:32 to 9:12 p.m. CDT (01:32–02:12 UTC).[1] The survey notes a tornado debris signature (TDS) was present, and reports along the tornadoes path confirms this. Although damage supported an EF1 rating, velocity data from nearby radar KFDR indicated the tornado may have been stronger, with winds of 114 kt (≈131 mph).[2]

Impact

Damage consisted mainly of downed power poles, tree damage, and damage to outbuildings and a few farmsteads in rural Tillman County causing $50,000 in damage. No casualties were recorded.[2]

Related events

An anticyclonic EF1 tornado occurred shortly afterward from near Loveland, OK to west-northwest of Grandfield, OK (9:18–9:32 p.m. CDT).[1]
