On 18 January 2024, a Jetways Airlines Fokker 50 contracted by the United Nations to carry humanitarian aid from Mogadishu to Ceel Barde, Somalia, ran off the runway upon arrival at its destination and impacted a house, destroying the aircraft.[1] There were no passengers on the flight but there were four crew members carrying humanitarian aid from the Somali capital. The commander was killed, the first officer survived with serious injuries, and the other two occupants were left "shocked and speechless".[2][3]

Aircraft[edit]

The aircraft involved was a Fokker F50, registered 5Y-JWG and having serial number 20191. With more than 30 years of operational life behind it, the aircraft had entered service in 1990 for NLM CityHopper. It then operated for KLM Cityhopper, before being converted for freight and subsequently moving to MiniLiner and Jetcom. It was purchased by Jetways Airlines, a Kenyan company, in 2017.[4][better source needed]

Accident[edit]

Elbarde airport confirmed the accident, reporting that the plane was carrying four UN workers from the World Food Programme; the plane impacted the house outside the airport during an attempted go-around after one of the landing gear struts failed to extend.[citation needed]
