On September 16, 2025, a shooting occurred on West 16th Street, near Lincoln Middle School, in Berwyn, Illinois. Steven Lee, aged 54 years old, reportedly shot and killed two victims in a vehicle with a rifle before killing himself. [1][2][3] An assistant principal, Nerissa Lee, was killed in the shooting. [4] She was 46 years old at the time of her death. [4] Lincoln Middle School also went under lockdown during the shooting until it was safe to lift the lockdown. Though no one inside the school was hurt and the shooter never breached the school. Two other people have been identified, Steven Lee and Nerissa Lee’s mother at the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. [5]
The shooting is apparently a “domestic related incident” between Steven Lee (husband), Nerissa Lee (wife), and Nerissa’s mother according to the Berwyn Police Department. [5] The exact argument or frustration that occurred between the victims and the shooter is unknown. After the shooting, Nerissa’s sister spoke of the shooting in a interview with the news [5][6] and Lincoln Middle School and other Berwyn residents would memorialize the Nerissa Lee.
Shooting
Shortly after 4:00, Steven Lee rammed his car head-on into Nerissa Lee’s car with her mother in the passenger seat. It didn't take long for shooting to start. Steven fired several times into the windshield, striking both Nerissa and her mother. Officers responding were met with gunfire, but didn't return fire. A resident’s door camera would display loud gunshots, but now capturing the attack on video. [7] The responding officers reportedly sent back up, only to find Steven with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No one else was injured or killed in this shooting. The two vehicles were eventually removed, and an investigation started.
Aftermath
In the aftermath, Berwyn North School District 98 Superintendent Dr. Michelle Smith posted a message on the district’s Facebook page that Nerissa Lee has been killed in a shooting outside Lincoln Middle School. [4] The message stated, "It is with great sadness that I announce to you that Nerissa Lee, Assistant Principal at Lincoln Middle School, lost her life in yesterday’s tragic shooting that occurred outside of Lincoln." [4] Smith later said that Lincoln Middle School wouldn't reopen until Thursday, two days after the shooting. Counselors were also available to students and staff because of the traumatic event. Many students and staff at the school saw her as a loving teacher and assistant principal. A loss to the middle school and her family. Including a seventh grader, Christopher Cruz-Villagomez, who was one of many children during after school programs to witness the shooting. [4] He spoke with counselors and CBS news saying things like, "I was like scared, like I was talking to my mom like you shouldn't come here because it was a little bit dangerous," and "Because I was scared because of what was happening, and it was very scary, and I didn't want her to be a part of the situation either." [4] Shana Everage, Lee’s sister also commented on the shooting. Speaking her feelings on the shooting she said, "They my family [sic], I mean... it’s a horrible thing, you know. I have a lot of emotions. I don’t quite know what to feel.” [6] When it was revealed to be an incident of domestic violence. She stated, "It had started ever since I want to say the tail end of June and basically the boiling point would have been yesterday.” [6]
A memorial with balloons, candles, and flowers were placed on the sidewalk next to the school. As well a message on an electronic sign of the school displayed a heart with the initials "AP LEE" and the words, "Gone but never forgotten."
