Elections in Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) in University of Chittagong are expected to take place on 12 October 2025, marking the first CUCSU election in years and a key event in Bangladesh’s student politics after the July Revolution of 2024.[1][2]
History
The Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) was established in 1966 to provide student representation and leadership at the University of Chittagong. Its first election was held in 1970, followed by six polls over the next two decades, culminating in the last election on 8 February 1990, which elected Nazim Uddin as vice-president and Azim Uddin as general secretary. The union was suspended in December 1990 after the murder of student leader Farukuzzaman during violent clashes.[3]
Efforts to revive the CUCSU gained pace in 2025. On 2 May, the Vice-Chancellor committed to holding elections after the upcoming convocation. On 1 August 2025, the university approved a new constitution, introducing a 30-year age limit for candidates and voters, expanding posts, and modernizing the union’s structure with new portfolios and procedural reforms.[4] The long-awaited schedule was formally announced on 28 August 2025, setting polling day for 12 October 2025—marking the end of a 35-year hiatus of CUCSU elections.[4]

Background
The July Revolution of 2024 ousted Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League government, ending the long dominance of Bangladesh Chhatra League in national student politics. Following DUCSU’s revival, pressure mounted for holding CUCSU elections at Chittagong University, considered the “second largest” student parliament of Bangladesh after Dhaka University.[6]
