Local elections was held in Mapandan on May 12, 2025 as part of the 2025 Philippine general election. Mapandan, Pangasinan voters will elect a Mayor, a Vice Mayor, and 8 out of 10 members of the Mapandan Sangguniang Bayan[lower-alpha 1].

Background

Administration Accomplishments

Infrastructure Projects

In 2024, Mapandan inaugurated a new command center integrating barangay CCTV systems, managed by the PNP, BFP, and MDRMO, to enhance local security. Additionally, a new Sangguniang Bayan Hall was opened to better serve municipal governance needs.[4][5]

Land Reclassification

The Sangguniang Bayan of Mapandan passed Municipal Ordinance No. 5, s.2024, reclassifying 55,000 square meters of agricultural land to commercial use for the development of a memorial park by Forest Lake Development, Inc. This ordinance was affirmed by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Pangasinan.[6]

Aid to Displaced Workers

In March 2024, during the Mapandan Festival, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, in collaboration with the local government, provided assistance to 500 displaced workers. The aid included grocery packs, meals, vitamins, masks, and select items like bicycles and mobile phones.[7]

Health Initiatives

BUCAS Center in Barangay Torres

The Department of Health is establishing a Bagong Urgent Care and Ambulatory Services (BUCAS) Center in Barangay Torres to provide free urgent care and ambulatory services to residents of Mapandan and nearby municipalities.[8]

Super Health Center Inauguration

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go attended the inauguration of a new Super Health Center in Mapandan, which offers laboratory procedures and dental services, aiming to enhance healthcare access in the Province.[9][5]

Corruption Allegations

In Dr. Toto Causing's livestream with Jaime Aquino, it was reported that the Mayor of Mapandan, the Sangguniang Bayan, and several municipal heads are suspected of corruption due to the procurement of 16 Isuzu vehicles at inflated prices. The vehicles were allegedly acquired at a cost significantly higher than their market value, raising concerns about possible corruption and misuse of public funds. Jaime Aquino later filed a case against the Mayor of Mapandan, the Sangguniang Bayan, and several municipal heads for graft and corruption with the Philippine Ombudsman.[10]

Jeepney Modernization Issue

On August 14, 2024, jeepney drivers and operators in Mapandan, Pangasinan, led by the Public Utility Jeepney Transport Corporation (PUJTC), staged a strike to express concerns over the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP). The protest centered on the sudden inclusion of other transport cooperatives in the Mapandan-Dagupan route, which the PUJTC claims undermines their operations. PUJTC President Benjamin Mosada questioned the abrupt entry of these cooperatives, stating that there was a lack of transparency in the process. In response, representatives from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region 1 engaged in discussions with the group, assuring them that their concerns would be addressed through proper channels. The local government clarified that the cooperative in question applied for the route based on a loop designed by the provincial government and that the PUJTC had been invited to participate in the process but failed to meet the necessary requirements.[11]

Karl Vega runs for a 2nd term as Mayor of Mapandan. His opponent is Jaime Aquino, a publisher and correspondent of People's Journal, Manila Standard, The Daily Tribune at Manila Times.[12] Jaime Aquino was expelled from the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) after launching an investigation against Raul Lambino and his wife Marilyn Lambino. Jaime Aquino was also dismissed from the Manila Times for gross violation of media ethics after Jaime Aquino concocted several investigations against several politicians that were eventually debunked.[13]
