On the evening of May 4, 2026, at 3:30 p.m., a shooting occurred near the White House after the United States Secret Service engaged with an armed individual[1] in the area around the Washington Monument. At the time of the event, President Donald Trump was holding a business event inside the White House.[2][3]
According to officials, the person was acting suspiciously and fled when approached by officers. During the pursuit, the individual fired a weapon, and Secret Service agents returned fire, striking the suspect.[4][5] The suspect was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. A child who was nearby was also injured, though their injuries were reported as not life-threatening.[6] As of 2026, it is not known if the attacker has died.
Safety procedures
The White House was placed under a brief lockdown[7] while the area was secured. Authorities confirmed that there was no breach of the White House itself and said it is not yet clear whether the building was the intended target. Investigations are ongoing.
