The 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be the 20th tournament of the FIBA Basketball World Cup contested by national men's basketball team of the member associations of FIBA. This will be the third tournament under the new cycle which started in 2019.

It is expected that 32 teams will participate in the tournament to be determined via a qualification process.

Host Selection[edit]

As of January 2022, Australia, Israel and Romania expressed their interest to host the 2027 Basketball World Cup

  • Australia Australia

As Australia was selected to host the 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, Australian media began to report that the national federation is also exploring the idea of bidding for the 2027 World Cup.[1]

  • Canada Canada and United States United States

Although the Canada Basketball and USA Basketball has yet to announce the bid, Canada and United States are considering the favorites to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2027, it would mark a warm-up to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles if Canada and United States are awarded. Both countries have hosted it once each, Canada hosted the event in 1994 and United States hosted it as well in 2002.

  • Israel Israel

In February 2020. Israeli's Sports Minister Miri Regev informed FIBA President Hamane Niang on Israel's interest to organize the 2027 Basketball World Cup. If elected. this will be Israel's first hosting of any major world championship.[2]

  • Romania Romania

In January 2022, Romania applied to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2027. At the moment when the Romanian Basketball Federation applied FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis supports the Romanian candidacy to host the 2027 event. [3]

Withdrawn bids[edit]

  • Argentina Argentina and Uruguay Uruguay

After losing the 2023 World Cup hosting rights to the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia; FIBA offered Argentina and Uruguay to submit another bid for the 2027 World Cup facing no opposition in the bidding process. However, they were required to revise their plan and present it to the international organization again by June 2018. [4] However, the two nations formally withdrew their bid in May 2018. [1]

Format[edit]

As expected, the tournament will be played in three stages. In the first stage, the 32 qualified teams will be sorted into eight groups of four (A–H), each team in a group will play each other once. The top two teams from each group will then advance to the second group stage. In the second group stage, there will be four groups (I–L) of four made up of the teams that advanced from the first round, again playing each other once. The top two teams from groups I to L will qualify for the final knockout phase.[5]
