20th Century Games (formerly known as 20th Century Fox Games) is an American video game company that is a division of 20th Century Studios and Disney Entertainment, which is owned by The Walt Disney Company. As with Disney's other game brands such as Lucasfilm Games, 20th Century Games is not a full-fledged publisher, only functioning as a licensor for all 20th Century Studios-related properties.
History[edit]
20th Century Fox previously held their own video game division - Fox Interactive, which published and developed games on various 20th Century Fox properties as well as some original titles. The division was sold to Vivendi Universal Games in 2003, and would allow Fox to license their properties to other game publishers. These have been solely branded under the standard 20th Century Fox game.
20th Century Fox Games was formed in 2006 and it was a video game publisher and developer mainly concerned with titles based on 20th Century Fox properties, such as The Simpsons, The X-Files, Family Guy, the Alien and Predator film franchises, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 24, Futurama, the Die Hard film series, the Ice Age trilogy of films, American Dad!, King of the Hill, the Independence Day film series, and Avatar. They have also been involved with original titles, including Croc and No One Lives Forever. It was an American game publishing company launched in 2006. it was shut down in 2017 along with Fox Digital Entertainment.
Fox returned to video game publishing with the formation of FoxNext in 2017, who acquired game developer Cold Iron Studios to develope a AAA Aliens shooter game.[1]However, after the Acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney, in January 2020 Disney sold FoxNext to Scopely, as they preferred licensing their properties rather than fully publishing them. Scopely, being a mobile company, subsequently sold Cold Iron to Daybreak Game Company which in turn saved the Aliens game.[2]
Disney then silently formed 20th Century Games in 2021 to function as a licensor for all 20th Century Studios-related properties, and Aliens: Fireteam Elite was one of the first titles released under the new brand.
On July 14, 2022, 20th Century Games announced a collaboration with developer Survios to release an Aliens title for PC and VR headsets.[3]
