The 2S38 Derivatsiya-PVO is an amphibious self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle (SPAA) developed by Uralvagonzavod and undergoing trials by the Armed forces of the Russian Federation. Designed to neutralize both tactical aircraft and UAVS, cruise missiles, air-to-surface missiles, and rockets, it is based on the BMP-3 chassis and equipped with a 57 mm automatic cannon with an effective range of 6 km.

History[edit]

The project of the Derivatsiya-PVO complex was presented to the public at the international military-technical forum "Army-2017" - in the form of a scale model.[1]

First photos of the vehicle appeared in January of 2018.[2]

In 2020, Derivatsiya-PVO took part in the Victory Day Parade on in Moscow.[3] It was reported that state trials of the system were planned for 2021.[4] In January 2022 MOD stated that trials for 2S38 would end in this year.[5] Rostec representative stated in April 2024 that Derivatsiya-PVO finished development in 2023 and they were working to put the vehicle into service with the troops.[6]

Description[edit]

The Derivatsya is armed with a single-barrel 57mm cannon, integrated into a remote-controlled and unmanned turret. Effective against ground targets such as armored vehicles or light fortifications, it can intercept aircraft, missiles, or projectiles flying at speeds close to 1 800 km/h.[7]

2S38 is equipped with an optical-electronic detection and targeting system which allows for 360-degree panoramic observation, as well as sectoral viewing.[8]

Made with a welded aluminum alloy armor, the hull provides protection against 30 mm armor-piercing projectiles and can be improved with reactive armor plates. Equipped with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems, the 2S38 has smoke grenade launchers, a thermal/TV imaging system with engagement capability, and automatic target tracking, a rangefinder, and a laser guidance system.[7] The vehicle is powered by a UTD-29 V-10 diesel engine, developing 500 hp and mounted in the rear of the vehicle. Equipped with a manual transmission with 4 forward gears and 2 reverse gears, it has hydropneumatic suspension, which can be adjusted according to the type of terrain traversed.[7]

Penalized by a rather limited ammunition load for a vehicle of its category (148 rounds), to overcome this problem, precision ammunition as well as specific projectiles for drone destruction are being developed.[9]

Composition[edit]

The Derivatsiya combat system includes, in addition to the 2S38 weapon system, an ammunition supply vehicle 9T260 based on a Ural-4320 6x6 military truck and the Repair and technical support vehicle (MRTO) 9В9005 2В119 on the Ural-4320-1812-31 chassis. The 9T260 can reload two 2S38s simultaneously, an operation that can be completed in about 20 minutes.[7][10]
