350 Silicon Valley

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

350 Silicon Valley is a San Francisco Bay Area based grassroots climate justice 501(c)(3) non-profit. It started in 2012 as an outgrowth of a group of church members asking for fossil fuel divestment. 350 Silicon Valley is inspired by and loosely affiliated with 350.org, but has no legal connection. 350 Silicon Valley is associated with a number of other local groups fighting climate change, including 350 Bay Area, Fossil Free California, and Peninsula Interfaith Climate Action.

History[edit]

Inspired by Bill McKibben's 2012 "Do the Math" U.S. speaking tour, [1] members of the First Presbyterian Church in Palo Alto, along with a number of other Peninsula activists, formed a local independent chapter of the 350.org climate advocacy group. Its main efforts were focused on getting faith groups and investment firms to divest from fossil fuel holdings.

Mission[edit]

On its website, the organization states this as its purpose:

350 Silicon Valley is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to fighting for climate justice. We mobilize residents of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties for a speedy and just transition away from fossil fuels, and toward lower greenhouse gas emissions.
