3rd Battalion, The Rifles (3 RIFLES) is a Mechanized Infantry battalion part of the new Strike Brigade at Catterick. The regiment will change roles from "Light Mechanized" to "Mechanized" and will gain many new vehicles and change location.[1]
Before Army 2020[edit]
The battalion was a light role infantry battalion located in Redford Barracks in Edinburgh. The regiment recruited from Yorkshire and the North-East Of England. The regiment was part of the 11th Light Brigade and was the "spearhead battalion", which proved sucessfull in their deployment to Lebanon.[2][3][1]
Army 2020 and After[edit]
As part of Army 2020 the regiment joins the new Strike Brigade in Catterick. In 2021 the regiment will move from Dreghorn Barracks in Edinburgh to Catterick. The regiment is to be equipped with the new Mechanised Infantry Vehicle along with the Scots Guards, 4 SCOTS and, 1 YORKS. Since 2007 the regiment has deployed five times to Iraq and Afghanistan. It has deployed throughout the world many times on training exercises as well as operational deployments.[1] The deployments include going to:[1]
