450connect
450connect is the private LTE network and fail-safe platform for the digitalisation of critical infrastructures in Germany. It is based on a decentralised nationwide network of more than 3000 digital repeaters on 450 MHz.
Background
Due to accelerating climate change, natural disasters and extreme weather events such as storm surges and hurricanes are increasing in Germany. During the 2021 European floods, the network for communication and control of energy and water suppliers in Germany collapsed in that region.
The number of decentralised small energy producers, such as wind turbines and PV systems, has also increased significantly compared to 2022. Most are remotely controlled. The German energy industry called for its own M2M LTE network.
After conflicts over whether the 450 MHz band should in future be used by security authorities, including the German armed forces, or by operators of critical infrastructure, the Federal Network Agency awarded the 2021 band to the energy and water companies until at least 2040.
Network
In 2021, a start was made across Germany in the 450 frequency range to build a particularly secure and highly available LTE radio network for the energy and water industries and other critical infrastructures.[1] The network of 1,600 digipeaters is planned to be operational by the end of 2024. Grid operators thus have the opportunity to monitor energy generation, transport and consumption in real time and, if necessary, to control it. In addition, they can control the many decentralised wind, photovoltaic and CHP systems more efficiently and integrate them into their systems.[2]
450connect GmbH
Water and energy companies founded the company 450connect GmbH to own and operate the LTE450 network. The Cologne-based company received the exclusive assignment of the 450MHz spectrum until 2040. 450connect is backed by more than 70 utilities, including for example E.ON, Aliander, a consortium of regional energy companies and the Versorger-Allianz 450, which includes numerous public utilities, energy and water suppliers with the participation of the EnBW-subsidiary Netze BW.[3]
