45 Downstairs

45 Downstairs was created by Mary Lou Jelbart and Julian Burnside AO QC with a group of like minded arts supporters in 2002.
Situated in a former rag-trade building in what was once the bustling top end of Flinders Lane Melbourne, the organisation moved into the area previously occupied by the Robert Lindsay Gallery in th elower ground floor of 45 Flinders Lane Melbourne.
The single level space became known in Melbourne for being prepared to take artistic and financial risks to help promote the Arts in Melbourne.
A catchphrase for the orgainsation has been that " We make money for the artists, not from them"
In 2011, the organisation moved into the basement of the building which had for some years been a furniture dump for the nearby Rio Tinto offices. Within a few short months of taking occupancy 45 Downstairs had spread it wings with a dedicated theatre space and .
45 Downstairs since its inception has been steadfastly independent , relying on its original membership and on a dedicated philanthropic and supporter base to maintain its existence.
The theatre space has seen a number of ground breaking works in its years of existence. These have included premiers of a number of Patricai Cornelius plays including:

- Love and
- Runt -
It also has seen the premier production of Arnold Zable's Cafe Scheherazade
The Gallery originally curated by Mary Lou Jelbart has seen the development of a number of visual artists through two decades. It has become the venue of choice for many late and mid career artists and has encouraged emerging arts through providing a low cost exhibition space in the Melbourne CBD. Importantly in recent years the space has seen the flowering of the 45 Downstairs Emerging Artists Awards. The Awards have brought a number of artists to national attention.
