4 For the Fourth

The 4 For the Fourth is a 4 mile race held in Yorktown, Indiana.[1] The race is typically held on the 4th of July starting at 8:30 A.M.[1] The race started in 2011, and has been active since then, except in 2020, where the race was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[2] The event attracts over 1,300 runners / walkers annually.[3][4][5] The event raised over $53,000 and was the most popular 4th of July race/walk in Indiana[6].

Prize Purse[edit]
There is a $27,000 prize purse at the 4 For the Fourth.[7] $1,000 goes to the Male and female Champion.[7] Every student under the age of 19 that completes the race gets put into a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship, with 3 winners.[7] However if the temperature in Yorktown, Indiana gets above 94ºF (34.444ºC) the other $22,000 gets unlocked.[7] When this happens the Male and Female winner of each of the 11 age groups get $1,000 (The overall winners also get another $1,000).
Course[edit]
The 4 For the Fourth has had 2 courses over the years. From 2011-2019 the course started on State Road 32 and turned Left on Tiger Drive. From Tiger Drive the runners go starlight tell the runners hit the trail on the Yorktown Sports Park. The runners go around the trail and head back on Tiger Drive. The runners take a Left and go to Morrow's Meadow you go around that trail and head to the finish line.[8]
The course used after 2020 for the 4 For the Fourth is similar, however, you start and stop in a different Location. The Civic Green was built in Yorktown in 2021.[9] Starting in 2021 the 4 For the Fourth starts and finishes
s locat, the Civic Green. The runners start at the Civic Green on Canal Street and take Left on State Road 32. The middle of the race is the same, the runners take a left on Tiger Drive, a lap around the Yorktown Sports Park, and a lap around Morrow's Meadow. However, instead of finishing the lap you take a right and go across Buck Creek.[8] This takes the runners up a steep hill, once you get up the hill you have around a 1/4 of a mile (400m) to the finish line.[8]
There is also a 0.9 mile (1.448 Km) Fun Run. The Fun Run is typically run by children, however people of all ages can partake. This starts at the same spot as the 4-mile runners, except they take a left into Morrow's Meadow immediately and then head directly to the finish line.
After Race Activities[edit]
The Yorktown, Indiana 4th of July celebration has 4 major events. The first one is the 4 For the Fourth, which is followed by a cardboard Duct tape boat race.[10] Next is the Orchestra Indiana, and to finish off the night with Fireworks.[11][12]
The cardboard Duct tape boat race is held every year on the 4th of July, at 2 pm. You first have to build a boat constructed with only cardboard and Duct tape. The boat must hold a minimum of 2 people. It is run in heats, starting from the bank of with White River, below the Tiger Drive bridge, you paddle 100 yards (91.44 meters) to another bank on the White River. Whichever team makes it the fastest wins their heat.[13] The first 2 teams of every heat get to continue in the championship round. The champion team gets a Paddle as a trophy.[14]
The Orchestra Indiana plays at the Civic Green before Fireworks. Starting a 8:30 pm the Orchestra Indiana has a concert at the Civic Green free of cost.[11]
When it gets dark, at around 10:30 pm the Town of Yorktown puts on a Fireworks show. It is put on at Morrow's Meadow.[12]
