5TA
5TA were a mid-1980s pop trio consisting of Lance Jowers[1] (Vocals) Michael Moran (Guitar, bass, Fairlight) and Nick Rhodes[2] (Drums and percussion).
They released one single, Angel[3], on their own Torch Productions label in 1983 before signing to Arista the following year.
A 'taster' 12", Reckless, produced by the band was distributed to college radio DJs in the US before the band's first major label single Heaven[4] was released in early 1985[3].
The band appeared[5] on Channel 4's The Tube to promote the record alongside B.A.D and INXS but the single failed to chart.
A follow-up, My Brilliant Career, despite a prestigious John Peel session[6], yielded similarly lacklustre results.
The band toured, as support to It Bites, to promote the record with a backing group that included singer Julia Fordham.
A projected album, entitled A Kind Of Triumph[3], was recorded with Cure producer Dave Allen. Copies were sent to magazines for review purposes, but the record was never released.
Moran left the band in 1985, re-joining briefly to take part in the recording of their final single Low Rider, a cover of the 1975 War hit.
Jowers and Rhodes continued under the name Solid Johnson, while Moran went on to form The Main Thing[7] with former 5TA backing vocalist Angie Giles, signing to Island Records in 1991.
