Plot
Upon his release from prison after serving 16 years for murder, Adam (Luke Evans) is faced with the challenges of trying to reclaim his partner, Donna (Stephanie Leonidas) and their son Jimmy (Rudy Pankow) who was left to grow up without him. While trying to rebuild this life, Adam is left with having to confront the trauma of the family left broken by the actions of his crime including his victim's mother Anna (Olivia Carruthers) and younger brother Eli (Zac Adams) who are devastated as Adam's release and determined to get revenge.
The subplot follows the a young drug-dealer Mike (Rory Culkin) who is trying to escape a life of crime, but is continually found under the thumb of his gangster uncle, Leff (Alex Pettyfer). The two plots run parallel throughout the film until the stories converge when both Adam and Mike find themselves on the path to redemption with both left having to face the violent barriers that stands in their ways.
The film is a classic redemption story with the plot following the character development and psychological issues of those who were impacted by the trauma of the events mirroring themes found in cult classic series such as the Sopranos and The Wire[5]
Reception
The film was met with mixed reviews focusing on the complex theme and well thought out characters and character development but overall comments on how too much has been attempted to fit into a film where it potentially would have been better suited for a series.
Howard Gorman of CinemaChords.com gave it 4/5 stars. Where he calls it 'a bold and emotionally charged triumph of independent cinema' and continues to write: "The authenticity of the film’s gritty drama pulls the audience into this underworld, revealing the protagonist’s struggles, regrets and glimmers of hope. Instead of relying on action-thriller clichés, Allocco keeps the focus on the complexity of his characters and their emotional truths. The result is a triumph of independent cinema – a bold and emotionally charged experience that unflinchingly captures the gritty complexities of the human condition in the criminal world."[6]
Catherine Bray of The Guardian gave it 3/5 stars. Stating: "This tangle of conflicting interests is sketched out plausibly enough, but just as we’ve started to get to know these people it’s time to wrap things up. That’s not because the film is too short – if anything, the pace could use tightening – but because there are so many significant characters that we don’t really get to enough inner lives to be sufficiently invested in how things will turn out. It almost feels like an extended pilot for an unmade TV show."[5]
Silverscreen Analysis gave it a C- rating and states: "Evans brings plenty of sincerity to this character to make it feel lived in and a few spots of this screenplay do feel unique. I also appreciated the direction Allocco showcases in the closing minutes of this film. The ending of this movie is extremely well done, and it makes you wish the film that led up to it was a bit tighter, with more of a focus on just a few of the characters."[7]
Karina Adelgaard of Heaven of Horror gave it 3/5 starts. She states: " I was caught up in all the drama from the beginning." and continues on stating "Dealing with topics such as pride, ignorance, toxic masculinity, and guns in neighborhoods, where no one is surprised when yet another life is taken is brutal. The repeating cycle must be broken...It also deals with grief, regret, forgiveness, and even hope. The topics covered require the audience to relate to both the victims and the perpetrators"[8]
Steve Norton of Screenfish writes of the use of cinematography to further the meaning behind the plot: "This is meant to be a world where everyone is making deals and violence befalls those who double-cross. Even so, Allocco also embeds the film with a certain sense of heart. Beneath the brutality, Pressure is really a film about trying to heal in the midst of the hurt.[9]
Allocco highlights this tension visually through his use of lighting. In moments where the criminal underworld dominates, the screen is immersed in shadows. The viewer feels the unwelcome nature of these spaces, recognize that these corners of the city are unsafe. However, when characters are fighting for their family, these conversations take place in the light. In doing so, there’s a certain sense of hopefulness that makes these characters feel genuine, as though a new day is potentially dawning for them. Torn between the darkness and the light, Allocco wants the viewer to understand the pervasive evil that surrounds them yet also to yearn for their survival."[10]
