The 5th AVN Awards ceremony, organized by Adult Video News (AVN), took place on January 8, 1988 at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Paradise, Nevada beginning at 9:00 p.m. PST / 12:00 a.m. EST.[1] During the ceremony, AVN Awards were presented in 33 categories, plus several extra awards, honoring pornographic movies released the previous year. The ceremony was produced by Mark Stone and Gary Todd.[2] The show was hosted by Adult Video News publisher Paul Fishbein and executive editor Gene Ross.[3]
Firestorm II won the most awards with four, however, the Best Film award went to Careful, He May Be Watching.

Actor John Leslie performed at the show by playing harmonica and jamming with the Moonlight Entertainers, which was the live band during the show. Allison Saiko sang "Heat Wave".[2]
