5th Pillar is a global NGO having special Consultative Status from the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council[1][circular reference], formed with the aim to act as the 5th pillar of democracy. The NGO was formed in Trichy on August 31, 1997 by Mr. M.B. Nirmal and was later taken over by Mr. Vijay Anand as President and Co-Founder after 10 years.[2][3]

The NGO aims to Encourage, Enable, and Empower every citizen to eliminate corruption at all levels of society. It has different programs under its banner, the most famous one being the Zero rupee note against corruption. This zero rupee note was first distributed to the students of Tamil Nadu, the Southern State of India, to initiate a fight against corruption.[4] [5][6]. The NGO has since distributed over a million zero rupee notes across 600 institutions.[7][8]

The NGO also started its RTI awareness and services program in March 2007 to help citizens easily file their RTI and get necessary information.[9]

Clubs and Chapters

The NGO has different student chapters and clubs in universities and colleges across the globe.[citation needed]
