5th Pillar is a global NGO with special Consultative Status from the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council[1][circular reference], formed with the aim to act as the 5th pillar of democracy. The NGO was formed in Trichy on August 31, 1997 by Mr. M.B. Nirmal and was later taken over by Mr. Vijay Anand as President and Co-Founder after 10 years.[2][3]

The NGO aims to Encourage, Enable, and Empower every citizen to eliminate corruption at all levels of society. It has various programs, the most notable being the Zero rupee note campaign against corruption. This zero rupee note was first distributed to students in Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India, to initiate a fight against corruption.[4] [5][6] The NGO has since distributed over one million zero rupee notes across 600 institutions.[7][8]

The NGO also launched its RTI awareness and services program in March 2007 to assist citizens in filing their RTI requests and obtaining necessary information.[9]

Clubs and Chapters

The NGO has student chapters and clubs in universities and colleges worldwide.[citation needed]
