Many struggle between the answer 9 or 1 for the problem 6/2(1+2). The answer is 1. Many people get the answer,9, by adding 1+2 and getting three then dividing 6 by 2 and getting three then, multiplying the two together and getting 9, or thinking you have to go from left to right because they mistake PEMDAS for BODMAS, in which case, division would come before multiplication. But, PEMDAS is more commonly used and you should only use BODMAS if the instructions say so. If there are no instructions, PEMDAS should be used at all times. PEMDAS stands for: Parenthesis, Exponets, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. BODMAS stands for Bracket, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. You should ONLY use BODMAS if the instructions say so. Otherwise, you should use PEMDAS, which is why 6/2(1+2)=1. You should first, following PEMDAS, add 1 and 2 resulting in 3. Then, since PEMDAS clearly states multiplication before division, you should multiply 2 by 3 which gives you 6. Lastly, you should divide 6 by 6, ending with 1 as your answer. The equation should look like this:
6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)
