7 Colors Of A Rainbow is a 2021 book by Nigerian author, Igbo Clifford Chimaizuobi. It was first published in July 2021 by the Julob Media and follows the story of Sonia, a Nigerian female blogger who is trying to balance being a lesbian and her pastor father.
The novel is told in a first person narrative fr
om the protagonist's viewpoint, namely Sonia, and as such, the story is told with her voice and perspective.
It is Clifford's first published full novel.
Plot[edit]
The novel tells the story of a Nigerian lesbian blogger and battles surrounding her sexuality.
From having a pastor father who couldn’t stand having a lesbian daughter, to suicide attempts, rape, running away from home, forced marriage and the most beautiful love story ever.
Characters[edit]
Ikechukwu Sonia Chetachi: The main character, young female protagonist of the novel and the voice of the first person narrative. She is made to pass through the thorns of homophobia, starting from her strictly religious father.
Anita: Sonia's classmate from secondary school and lover. She would eventually cheat on her.
Mr. Glasses: Also known as Mr. Blogger. He helped put Sonia through blogging.
Mr. Simon: A manager at Sonia's workplace. They both got comfortable and he dazed and raped her.
Aunty Grace: Sonia's aunty and medical worker. She would attempt suicide in her house at Enugu.
Pastor Ikechukwu Donald: Sonia's religiously strict and homophobic father. He would attempt forcing her into marriage and eventually disown her.
Racheal: Attended the same secondary school as Sonia, and would have a crush on her.
Themes[edit]
The novel[1][2][3][4] draws on several themes related to life as an African, homosexuality, parents-daughter relationship and abuse.
Clifford in the novel also stressed on relatives' interferences in family matter, and how Anita ran to Aunty Grace when she was having a tough time. Aunty Grace on the other hand will try to talk to her parents.
It also talked about romance and same-sex relationships. Sonia would fall in love with Anita and they will fight to keep it up despite all odds.
