Purpose[edit]

Young veterans from New Guinea enjoy a rest away from the battle zone at a convalescent camp somewhere in North Queensland.[1]

Whilst Sun Tanning is not officially recognized as an activity in the Australian Defence Force, many soldiers throughout the history of the ADF have participated and engaged in Sun Tanning and similar activities during times of rest away from the battle-zones as a way to recover and recuperate as shown below. The 8/12 Sun Tanning Team is a reminder of Australian History during all wars, demonstrating the ability to relax, condition, exercise and strive to better ones self mentally and physically in and out of the battle.

Fun in the surf[edit]

Exactly 80 years ago, the first contingent of Australian infantry troops arrived in the Middle East after a voyage that saw them zig-zag their way across the Indian Ocean to avoid the threat of prowling German U-boats. After disembarking in Egypt, most of the troops were transported to camps in Palestine. There, they were trained for months to prepare them for combat. Between 100,000 and 130,000 Australian troops eventually served in the Middle East between 1940-42, according to historian Mark Johnston, writing in his book, Anzacs in the Middle East.[2]

The striking images below were shot during surf carnivals held at beaches in Gaza and Tel Aviv over the years the WWII Australians were stationed in Palestine. More can be found on the Australian War Memorial website specifically mentioning the "Australian Surf Lifesaving Carnival Gaza Beach Palestine".[3]
