The Eighth Jatiya Sangsad (Bengali: অষ্টম জাতীয় সংসদ, romanized: ashtoma jatīẏa saṅsada, lit. 'Eighth National Parliament') was formed with the elected members of the 8th General Election. Out of the 345 seats 300 members are directly elected by the people and rest 45 seats are reserved for women and are filled by proportional representation.With a clear majority BNP leader Khaleda Zia was invited to form a government and on 10 October 2001, was sworn in as Prime Minister and formed her Cabinet, which included members of her allied parties. The first sitting of the Eighth Parliament occurred on 28 October 2001 with Jamiruddin Sircar as its new Speaker.BNP won 193 seats out of the 300 seats and formed the coalition government with the other 3 parties of Four Party Alliance under the leadership of Khaleda Zia.The other three parties Jamaat-e-Islami,BJP and IOJ won total 23 seats. Awami League got 62 seats and became the main opposition party.
