9bot is a web-based software service, developed in Brazil, for administering groups and communities on the messaging application WhatsApp. It belongs to a category of third-party tools that connect to a WhatsApp account and act on that account's groups through automated rules. The service is not affiliated with WhatsApp or its parent company, Meta Platforms.[1]
Background
Groups and Communities on WhatsApp
A WhatsApp group can hold up to 1,024 members, or 1,025 including its creator.[2] WhatsApp Communities bring together up to 100 groups under an automatically created announcement group, with a limit of 2,000 members across a community.[3]
Native administrative controls include:
- an optional setting that requires admins to approve each join request, which is off by default;[4]
- "Send for admin review", which lets members flag suspicious messages to admins.[5]
In 2026 WhatsApp added group message history for new members, which admins can disable,[6] and an @all mention that only admins can use in groups of more than 32 people.[7]
Usage
In the United Kingdom, Ofcom's Online Nation report found that 90% of online adults used WhatsApp in May 2025, and 74% used it every day. That made it the most widely used messaging service in the country.[8]
Spam and scams
Groups are a channel for fraud in several English-speaking countries:
- United Kingdom: Action Fraud received 636 reports in 2024 of a scheme in which criminals posed as members of community, religious and work groups and asked for one-time codes to take over accounts.[9]
- India: the Ministry of Home Affairs reported 43,797 complaints about WhatsApp misuse by cyber criminals in the first quarter of 2024, more than for any other platform.[10][11]
- United States and Australia: the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Australia's Scamwatch describe "task" job scams that begin with unsolicited WhatsApp messages. Scamwatch notes that victims are often added to group chats in which fake employees post their supposed earnings.[12][13]
In August 2025 WhatsApp introduced a "safety overview" that is shown when someone the user may not know adds them to a group.[14][15]
WhatsApp prohibits unauthorized automated or bulk messaging, and accounts showing signs of such activity can be restricted or banned.[16][17]
Third-party group management tools
Administrators of large or numerous groups sometimes use external software that automates tasks such as removing messages containing links, greeting new members, or posting scheduled content. Many of these tools connect to WhatsApp as a linked device, the same mechanism WhatsApp uses for WhatsApp Web, which can be authorized with a QR code or an eight-character pairing code.[18]
Description
9bot connects to the customer's own WhatsApp number through a pairing code or QR code; it does not provide phone numbers.[1] Administrators configure it through a web panel. According to the developer, it can:[19]
- apply moderation rules: removal of messages with links not on an allow list, filtering of listed words, limits on message frequency, and a sequence of warnings followed by removal of a member;
- approve or reject membership requests according to filters;
- send welcome and scheduled messages;
- forward posts from RSS feeds;
- produce activity reports per group.
Rules can be combined in a visual editor in which an event, such as a new message or a member joining, triggers conditions and actions.[19]
The service also exposes a REST API and a remote server using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), authenticated with OAuth. Through it, AI assistants can perform actions in groups the customer has authorized.[1] The developer states that the service is not intended for bulk messaging to people who did not request it.[1] The interface is available in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese.[1]
