A-G requirements

The A–G requirements are the subjects that must be completed in high school in order to be admitted to campuses of the University of California and California State University.

These requirements are:

• A: Social Studies – 2 years. One year of world history and one year of American history. A semester of American government may be substituted for one of the American history semesters.
• B: English – 4 years
• C: Mathematics – 3 years of college prep mathematics at algebra or above
• D: Lab science – 1 year of biology and 1 year of either chemistry or physics
• E: Language other than English – 2 years of the same language
• F: Visual and performing arts – 1 year of art, dance, drama or music
• G: College prep elective – 1 additional year of any of requirements A–F or certain other approved electives
