The A508 is a 51 kilometres (32 mi) north-south A-class road in central England, forming the route from Market Harborough in Leicestershire, via Northampton, to Old Stratford in Northamptonshire, just outside Milton Keynes.

Major settlements

The major settlements along the route are Market Harborough,[17] Great Oxendon,[18] Kelmarsh,[19] Maidwell,[20] Hanging Houghton,[21] Brixworth,[22] Pitsford,[23] Boughton,[24] Northampton,[25] Roade,[26] Grafton Regis,[27] Yardley Gobion,[28] before finishing outside Old Stratford.[29]

Route

Market Harborough

The road starts in Market Harborough,[2] Leicestershire, at the junction of the A4304 St Mary's Road and Clarence Road. It begins as Kettering Road,[30] crosses the River Welland,[31] and continues as Springfield Street, Northampton Road and Harborough Road, before crossing the county boundary into Northamptonshire.[32]

The A508 is named Harborough Road for 21 kilometres (13 mi), until it becomes Harborough Road North at a roundabout in the village of Boughton. The first village in Northamptonshire is Great Oxendon, where the road passes St Helen's Church.[33] The road then passes Kelmarsh Hall and Kelmarsh village. South of Kelmarsh it intersects with the A14 road, a dual carriageway trunk road, at a grade-separated junction.[3][4]

South of the A14, the road continues through Maidwell[20] and Lamport, where it is served by X7 and 77 buses to Northampton.[34]

History

Bypasses

The Yardley Gobion bypass, extending from Grafton Road to 300 m (980 ft) south of Yardley Road, was opened by Tim Boswell, MP for Daventry.[35] The project, executed by Kottler and Heron (a division of the Galliford Group), cost £1.9 million.

The 1.9-mile (3.1 km) Brixworth bypass was inaugurated on 27 October 1989 by Roger Freeman, MP for Kettering.[citation needed] The project, undertaken by Galliford, amounted to £4.4 million.[citation needed]

The 1.6-mile (2.6 km) Roade bypass, an S2[clarification needed] road, was opened on 21 August 2023. The construction was carried out by Winvic Construction as part of the SEGRO Logistics Park development.[36]
