ABRI Accessible eBook Reader Interface
ABRI (Accessible eBook Reader Interface) is a software for reading digital books in ePub format, designed to be used by people with motor disabilities. [1]
History
ABRI was created in 2018 following an appeal made by a French MP to the Secretary of State in charge of disabled people (France)[2]. He told her that people with motor disabilities do not have dedicated software that allows them to read a digital book independently.
The developer of ABRI, who had previously in the early 2000s invented Reading books with easy access (for disabled)[3], distributed on CDroms. The software is under a proprietary license.
Developers
Eticotopia Technologies, the publisher and creator of ABRI, is an initiative supported by French associations of disabled users[4][5].
Eticotopia received a label from the French Secretary of State for the Disabled in 2019[6]. ABRI is tested by functional rehabilitation specialists[7]. Some references attest to the relevance of this eBook Reader for the public concerned.[8][9][10][11]
Features
Features of Abri include easy controls such as pressing a switch, or pressing the left click of the mouse (which is then used as a switch), or by pressing any key on the keyboard, or by pressing anywhere on the surface of a touch screen without having to aim at a specific area. People with severe disabilities have switch systems, which are set up by ergotherapists who thus allow them, with their physical possibilities (blink an eye, move a muscle, blow, ...), to produce a "click" usable in a computer environment, thus by ABRI which is specially designed to take up this "click" and allow navigation in a tree structure as well as in the pages of a digital book.
- Reading eBooks in ePub format
- Reading from left to right and from right to left
- Interfaces in "scan mode"
- Beep sound to reinforce the scan scrolling (optional)
- The user can choose a book from four integrated libraries
- The user can set the font size autonomously
- He can also choose fonts with or without serif.
- He can adjust the speed of the scan
- He can choose a two-page (book) or one-page (full screen) display
- He has a call system, with three sound levels, to call a life assistant or a caregiver.
- Compatibility with GRID3 (Environment Control for Windows)
The life assistant, or the user if he can control his environment (with Grid3 for example), must download his ePubs and then copy them into one of the four drawers that are created on the desktop when the software is installed. Once copied to these drawers, the ePubs are accessible in the four integrated libraries and can be used in scan mode.
The interfaces have a strong affordance and use only expressive symbols. In fact, ABRI can be used regardless of the language of the user since only ePubs contain text.
ABRI is available for Windows and Linux.
