Established on November 14, 2018, ADAF was founded by Cristina García del Campo, a medical-pharmaceutical translator and researcher, to protect public health and support individuals and families affected by adverse reactions to prescription medications. The organization’s mission is to raise awareness about the risks of pharmaceuticals, advocate for responsible prescribing, conduct research into drug safety and provide legal and emotional support to victims of drug-related harm. [1] [2] [3] [4][5] [6] [7]
Mission and Objectives
ADAF’s primary goal is to create a safer healthcare environment by promoting the sensible use of prescription medications. The organization focuses on:
Awareness: Educating the public about the potential risks and side effects of commonly prescribed drugs. Advocacy: Encouraging healthcare providers to adopt more responsible prescribing practices. Support: Offering legal assistance and emotional guidance to individuals and families seeking justice and compensation for damages caused by pharmaceuticals. Collaboration: Partnering with healthcare professionals, researchers, and regulatory authorities to ensure safer medication practices. [8] [9] [10] [11] [12]
History
ADAF was founded following Cristina García del Campo’s personal journey of advocacy. In 2017, while working as a medical translator, she encountered numerous cases of severe adverse reactions to Nolotil (metamizole), a painkiller widely used in Spain but banned in countries like the UK and the US. These reactions included agranulocytosis, a life-threatening condition that weakens the immune system. Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag [13] [14]
Her investigations revealed a significant number of cases among British and Irish ex-pats and tourists, prompting her to contact healthcare authorities and Spain’s Medicines and Health Products Agency (AEMPS). As a result of her efforts, restrictions were placed on prescribing Nolotil to at-risk groups, particularly non-residents and tourists. Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing pharmaceutical safety, Cristina established ADAF to continue her advocacy on a larger scale.
Services
ADAF provides a wide range of services to individuals and families affected by adverse drug reactions:
Educational Campaigns: Informing the public about safe medication use and potential risks through workshops, webinars, and informational materials. Legal Assistance: Helping victims pursue legal action and claim compensation for damages caused by prescription medications. Community Support: Building a supportive network of individuals affected by pharmaceuticals to share experiences and resources. Research and Reporting: Collaborating with medical professionals and regulatory bodies to document cases and influence policy changes.
Key Achievements
ADAF has made significant contributions to public health and pharmaceutical safety:
Nolotil Prescribing Restrictions: ADAF’s advocacy led to stricter guidelines on prescribing Nolotil to high-risk populations in Spain. Extensive Case Documentation: Over 400 cases of adverse reactions, including more than 100 involving Spanish patients, have been documented by the organization. Publications and Collaborations: The association has worked with medical experts and published findings in respected journals to raise awareness and improve practices. Expanding Impact: ADAF’s efforts have extended beyond Spain, drawing international attention to the need for better pharmaceutical regulations.
