ADECom Network
ADECom Network is a non-governmental organization in South India that works to empower women through politics, social development and economic opportunities for over 25 years. Founded in 1989 by Augustin Jayakumar [1], ADECom Network's goal is to bring universal human rights to oppressed south Indian minorities at the grassroots level. The organization addresses women's and children's issues in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. ADECom mainly focuses its efforts on caste discrimination, domestic violence, and building socio-economic units in order to increase employment opportunities for the poorest classes.
Among the communities targeted by Adecom’s programs is the Dalit community, also known as untouchables, who suffer from societal discrimination. Adecom is also leading campaigns on the protection of the environment, gender sensitivity and legal awareness. Adecom used to sustain other NGOs supporting Dalits in the Pondicherry region but it had to stop due to a lack of funding.
ADECom is devoted to the development of oppressed communities in Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu; Working directly with South India's most persecuted peoples, including members of the Dalit cast, tribal and rural communities as well as religious minorities. ADECom Network challenges stereotypes about women's place in society, stimulating dialogue against discriminatory beliefs and behaviours. ADECom Network works to give young people and women the skills, confidence and opportunities to end discrimination and inequalities.
ADECom Network advocates women's rights in the field of Domestic Violence in India, as well as Dalit rights in the state and national government levels[2]. Most cases of Domestic Violence and Abuse of human rights go unreported in the Ponducherry region, ADECom works to offer protective and legal services not provided by the local government.[3]
The beneficiaries of ADECom receive legal assistance for family cases: marriage certificate, birth and death certificates. In 2012-2013, 17 cases have been taken to court with the help of ADECom.
In order to increase their employment opportunities, some beneficiaries are offered training in typewriting, computer, project management, financial development, and accountancy. The rural women beneficiaries get typewriting skills and training for their marketing, design and production.
In part funded by the Karuna Trust, Institut de Coopération Internationale, Maitri Network, and Planète Urgence; ADECom is running field activities in three regions: Puducherry, Villupuram and Cuddalore district.
ADECom is currently employing 18 employees, with 2 instructors for the tailoring and computer training programs. It is also relying on 500 women leaders for implementing its programs and 50 local volunteers for theatre activities (2014).
