AD Achutha Kumar

AD Achutha Kumar is a drummer and percussionist from Chennai. Trained in drums and percussion instruments from the age of 8[1], AD Achutha Kumar balances his entrepreneurial role in event management as entertainment coordinator and his passion for music through his band, AD & the Band. He is also part of two other bands in Chennai, namely, Pranetra and Project Triplet.[2] With more than 2000 concerts across the globe, he has played in A R Rahman concerts alongside the drums maestro Sivamani. He has also played for A R Rahman in the movie Jodha Akbar and has been part of many celebrity bands such as Stephen Devassy and Keith Peters.

Early Learning Days

AD Achutha Kumar's guru is percussionist and founder of Jus Drums School of Percussion, S. Murali Krishnan. He has also completed his grade 8 in drum kit from the Trinity College, London. When he was 10, he got an opportunity to play for the musical maestro, AR Rahman. His exposure to music included being part of a children's band called Isaithuligal.[1] Achutha started his career as a solo artist, performing solo in interactive drum sessions and eventually taking up a career as a percussionist and drummer.[3] In parallel, he completed his school and college education, with a management degree from the Chennai Business School.[2]

AD & the Band

AD Achutha Kumar has recorded thousands of performances as a solo artist and as part of AD & the Band on concerts and on drumming web communities such as Drum Talk. AD & the Band performed at the Ampa Skywalk fest in 2018 accompanying leading singers such as Maalavika Sundar, Syed Subahan, Super Singer fame NK Priyanka.[4][5][6] AD Achutha Kumar's Six Pedal drum solo on the YouTube had about 32000 views[7] and his group’s performances with singers such as Super Singer fame Kaushik,[8] Pooja Vaidyanath,[9] and Anuradha Sriram[10] are popular. He has worked with musicians such as KS Chitra, SP Balasubrahmanyam, Stephen Devassy, and A Hariharan.[3] This band along with two other bands, Pranetra, which is an independent fusion band, and Project Triplet, an ethnic western band, is part of AD Live Entertainments. This group was recently in news because of its initiative in redefining live shows through wireless stage performances using the Zen drums, which enables effortless interaction with the audience during performances without the hurdles of wires. The band has trialled the wireless shows concept at the Business Excellence Leadership Awards, IBCN International Business Conference 2019, Sutherland SBI Annual Family Meet 2019, Indian Market Place 2019, and ILDCON. The band is trialling new approaches of making a flash mob-type of entrance with 10 instruments,[11] using unique musical instruments such as Aerophone and Keytar, and blending different genres of music.[12]
