Hazelnut production in Azerbaijan[edit]
Azerbaijan is the 4-th largest hazelnut producer country in the world, according to FAO statistics, 2016.[1] Annual crop usually estimates between 50-60 thousand tons of inshell hazelnuts, which are gathered from nearly 70 000 hectares land.[2] Most of these orchards are young and this accelerates the growth rate of hazelnut production of the country year by year. Azerbaijani Government aims to reach the total area of hazelnut orchards to 80 000 hectares and the crop yield more than 100 000 tons of inshell hazelnuts, until 2025.[3]
Establishment of the Consortium[edit]
Sudden increase in Azerbaijani hazelnut production led to the need for the expansion of hazelnut-exporting channels. In 2015 with the support of USAID Azerbaijan, there was established Azerbaijan Hazelnut Exporters Consortium (AHEC), which offers its export service to member hazelnut-producing companies. Most of exports based on raw hazelnut kernels, which are usually directed to EU market, especially to Italy and Germany. Other countries, like France, Spain, Russian Federation and Gulf Council Countries also play a key role in the companies hazelnut sales.
In 2017/2018 season AHEC exported nearly 2500 tons of ISO 22000 certified hazelnut kernels from Azerbaijan, which is significant number for emerging hazelnut industry of Azerbaijan. There are regional branches in Poland, Germany and in Russian Federation, which offers the clients in EU and Russia delivery-duty-paid (DDP) products for any volume. AHEC regularly participates in exhibitions, like Sial Paris, Anuga Cologne and WorldFood Moscow.
