AIAIAI is a Danish audio company founded in 2006 that designs and manufactures audio products.[1]
History[edit]
AIAIAI was founded in 2006 by Frederik Jørgensen, Christian Lorentzen, Peter Willer, and Jacob Moesgaard.[2][3] Their first headphone, the TMA-1, was introduced in 2010 in collaboration with professional DJs and music producers including James Murphy, A-Trak, Seth Troxler and Madlib.[4][5] The TMA-1 is included in the permanent collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), and was featured in the exhibition Less and More: the Design and Ethos of Dieter Rams.[6][7]
Following the success of the TMA-1, the company launched the TMA-2 headphone in 2015, designed as a modular framework of parts with speaker units, earpads, headbands, and cables.[8][9][10] The TMA-2 has been awarded the Good Design Award by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design,[11] Cannes Lions product design golden trophy,[12] and Clio Awards product design silver award.[13]
The company expanded on TMA-2 modularity with Bluetooth in 2017,[14] Alcantara ear-cushions in 2019, and bio-cellulose speaker drivers in 2019.[15] In 2020, AIAIAI upgraded its headphone packaging to responsibly sourced and recycled materials in an effort to curb its CO2 emissions.[16]
Partnerships[edit]
AIAIAI often collaborates with external design partners, including musical artist Young Guru (2013)[17][18], American streetwear company Carhartt WIP (2013),[19][20] American independent record label Stones Throw Record (2014).[21][22]
In 2020, AIAIAI partnered with global music platform NTS Radio and record label Brain Dead to launch a limited edition TMA-2 headphone, with all profits donated to anti-racist organisations. The resulting profits were split equally between three charities and organisations: The Black Curriculum in the UK, Mino in Denmark and The Movement for Black Lives in the US.[23]
In 2021, AIAIAI introduced headphones with speaker units made from recycled vinyl in collaboration with UK record label Ninja Tune.[24][25]
