AIP Publishing (AIPP) is a wholly owned not-for-profit[2] subsidiary of the American Institute of Physics (AIP), supporting AIP’s charitable, scientific, and educational purposes through scholarly publishing on its behalf and on the behalf of its publishing partners and member societies.[3] AIPP's digital platform, Scitation, hosts a portfolio of journals, conference proceedings, books, and the Physics Today magazine, as well as publications for AIPP’s publishing partners.
Historical overview[edit]
From its founding in 1931, AIP published scientific journals on behalf of its member societies and either acquired or developed journals of its own in fields where no one society had a mandate.[4] These offerings grew to include publishing services, books, and the 1997 release of its online platform, Scitation.[5] In 2013, recognizing the need to streamline and modernize its publishing operations — which were, to that point, distributed across a number of divisions and members societies — the American Institute of Physics established AIP Publishing to oversee the publishing of all its scholarly research journals.[6]
AIP Publishing’s governance was designed to be “leaner and more adaptable” than its parent institution, with a considerably smaller board intended to meet more frequently and consist of leaders from publishing, business, technology, its society customers, and scientists.[7]
The Cheif Executive Officer of AIPP is Alexandra “Alix” Vance,[8] whose tenure began in August 2020.[9]
Originally sharing AIP’s offices in New York City and then in Woodbury, New York, AIPP moved to its own location in Melville, Long Island in 1999.[10] An office in Beijing, China, opened by AIP in 2010,[11] now serves as AIP Publishing’s China office. In 2014, AIPP relocated to a collaborative open workspace in a different location in Melville, New York.[12]
