The American Martial Arts Alliance Sport Karate League, LLC, led by Grand Master Jessie Bowen, was founded in 2006 and includes the Who's Who in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He was an important figure for sport karate in the state as a competitor and event promoter in Durham, North Carolina. One of the oldest martial arts competitions in North Carolina, he started the Durham Karate Open in 1999 and has since hosted 46 competitions.
For the first North Carolina Amateur Martial Arts competition in 1982, Bowen served as the sports coordinator. Until 1989, he oversaw the competitions for Taekwondo and Karate. He was the 1987 Olympic Festival's Taekwondo coordinator hosted in Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as the North Carolina Amateur Sports Coordinator for the USOC at that time.
After traveling to Hawaii in 2002 to compete and what was falsely claimed as a US Olympic trials for karate Bowen decided to start the AMAA Sport karate League. The AMAA Sport Karate League and the AMAA Who's Who in the Martial Arts Hall of fame, along with his second tournament, the AMAA Nationals, was established in 2004.
Bowen made the decision to start the AMAA Sport Karate League after traveling to Hawaii in 2002 to compete in what was falsely advertised as a US Olympic trials for Karate. In 2004, he founded the AMAA Sport Karate League, the AMAA Who's Who in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and the AMAA Nationals.
Award ceremonies[edit]
The ceremony and banquets for the legends award is held at Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, the inductees receive a poster size plaque, custom ring and are included in the book “Martial Arts Masters and Pioneers: Who's Really Who in Martial Arts.”[1][2] At least 800 nominations of martial artists were received out of those 250 had the honor to be inducted into the AMAA Who's Who Legends Hall of Fame.[3][4][5][6][7]
2020 Award Ceremony[edit]
The award ceremony was to be held on June 26–27 in at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, but in light of the COVID-19 pandemic the AMAA's annual Legends Awards Banquet it was held online and aired on July 10 and 11 2020.[8] The ceremony honors inductees and nominees of the 2020 edition of Who's Who, and includes a tribute to Grandmaster Chuck Norris, who celebrated his 80th birthday that year.[9][6][10]
