APOGEE(A Professions Oreinted Gathering over Educational Experiences)..[1][2][3]is the annual international technical festival of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Pilani campus[4][5]. It was introduced in the year 1983 and since then has been hosted every year, usually during the month of March. Since its inception, APOGEE has hosted students and researchers from across the country. The guest lecture series of the fest, Think Again Conclave has received eminent speakers in the past which include A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Richard Stallman, Jimmy Wales, Kailash Satyarthi and Walter Lewin. Other events include the Paper Presentation Event, which is one of the oldest research paper presentation platforms in the country, and Project Presentation, which exhibits over 550 projects in various fields of science and engineering.

One of the largest student managed technical fests of the country, APOGEE aims to provide a platform to students and researchers all around the country to showcase their technical prowess and also promote the spirit of research and invention.

History[edit]

APOGEE[6][7][8] was first introduced in the year 1983, and has been attended by thousands of students from India and abroad every year. Now a 3-day festival, with over 85 different events spannning these 3 days which include various Technical Events and Exhibitions[9], International Drone Racing League, International Coding League, Robots-at-war, Full Throttle Grand Prix, and many more which aim to incline students towards intellectual and innovative participation in the fest.

Major events[edit]

Kernel events[10] of the fest include The Think Again Conclave, Papyrus Trails, Aarohan, Paper Presentation Event, Project Presentation, APOGEE Innovation Challenge(AIC) and various new introduced every year[11][12][13]

  • The Think Again Conclave is the official guest lecture series of APOGEE, usually held in the month of March. It is organized by the Department of Paper Evaluation and Presentation in association with various clubs and departments in BITS Pilani. Since its inception in 2012, this lecture series has received several personalities some of whom include Jeff Leiberman, Devdutt Pattanaik, Shiraz Minwalla and Danielle Feinberg.
  • Papyrus Trails is the official literature festival of BITS Pilani. Papyrus Trails has had numerous events, lectures, book releases to offer literary enthusiasts. The lit-fest has seen a line-up of august speakers including Radhika Vaz, Ajay Chaturvedi, Gurmehar Kaur, Manasi Kirloskar and Rohit Gupta.
  • Aarohan[14] is a pan India school level examination for classes 9th to 12th. Crafted and conducted by the students of BITS Pilani under the guidance of professors from various fields of science and engineering, the paper has one unified theme based on the various scientific phenomenons can be solved using a reasonable amount of knowledge of basic sciences and logical reasoning.
  • The Paper Presentation Event provides a platform to students across the country to present their research in the form of documented papers to a panel of eminent professors and researchers in the particular field. It is one of the oldest events of its kind in India.
  • The Project Presentation Event of APOGEE aims to find the next big idea in the field of engineering or science and witnesses around 550 projects every year.
  • The Apogee Innovation Challenge is an event conducted BITS Embryo. Its a kernel event of the fest where companies of various disciplines pose a design challenge pertaining to their interest. Teams of students, across the country, get around two months to solve the challenge and submit the solutions to the companies of their desired preference. The companies then decide the best 5 solutions pertaining to their requirements and those teams get a chance to present their idea in front of the company representatives during APOGEE.

Organizations involved[edit]

APOGEE[15][16] is organized by the CoStAA(Commitee of Students for Academic Activities), a 9-member body which comprises of the President and General Secretary of the Student Union and the heads of the 7 major departments in-charge of the festival:

  2. Department of Sponsorship and Marketing
  3. Department of Publications and Correspondence, APOGEE
  4. Department of Art and Publicity
  5. Department of Paper Evaluation and Presentation
  6. Department of Reception and Accomodation
  7. Department of Visual Media

Along with the aforementioned departments, various other clubs and minor departments also help in organizing the fest. These include Dept. of Photography, Dept. of External Affairs, Creative Activities Club, Dept. of Informalz, Photography Club, Astronomy Club, Firewallz among others.

The logo of APOGEE is a creative representation of the word "APOGEE" in Morse Code. The letters are written in Morse Code from the bottom to the top. It symbolises the amalgamation of creativity and technology, which happen to be the core concepts of the festival.

Themes[edit]

APOGEE also introduces various creative and imaginative themes every edition which serve as the main concept along the lines of which the events and talks are based. Past themes include A Cybernetic Vision[17], The Retrofuture[18] and The Reality Roulette[19]

Social Work[edit]

APOGEE also hosts Dhiti[20], a socio-technological event organised by NSS BITS Pilani amd Nirmaan Organization. Graced by personalities like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Dr. H. C. Verma, Dhiti seeks technical solutions to grass root problems provided by various NGOs through project presentations.
