Company history[edit]

Older logo

Under the leadership of Hans List, several engine experts joined forces in 1948 and founded the IBL (Ingenieurbüro List). The founders pursued the goal of developing modern engines based on the latest findings in basic research, taking into account the economic criteria that are important for the engine industry.

The first diesel engines from 1949 were already being mass-produced at the Jenbacher Werke in Tyrol and at the Andritzer Maschinenfabrik in Graz.

In 1951, the IBL became the AVL, the "Anstalt für Verbrennungskraftmaschinen List" (Institute for Combustion Engines List). In the following year, the central test site was built in Kleiststraße in Graz-Lend, which is still home to the group management and the headquarters of the research and development activities.

Among the most important achievements in the company's early days was the development of the first direct-injection four-stroke diesel engines with swirl ducts for truck engines in 1958. These replaced the two-stroke engines and four-stroke prechamber engines that had been common until then.
