A Brief Encounter With Myself is the third studio album by Mexican progressive rock band Tangerine Circus. This album marks a big departure and sonic evolution from the band's second effort, The Conspiracy Chronicles. With a 5 year gap between the compositions of both albums, this album is a far greater testimony of the band's current musical style, reflecting also a long creative process that began taking place ever since the band released their first two albums.

A Brief Encounter With Myself carries a far more intimate and personal concept, as opposed to the band's 2015 releases. The album tells the story of a nameless protagonist that undergoes a personal life journey that hits different stages of both happiness and despair, from growing up in a protective and loving environment to feeling lonely, desperate and let down by everyone in his life until he stands up and becomes an adult in the process. The album is divided in three chapters, referenced by the three parts of one of the centerpieces of the album, 'I Am Me'.[2]

Concept, Composition and Recording[edit]

After spending almost two years promoting their debut 2-CD Package, in late 2016 the band felt creatively in a good place to start composing new music for their third album. Before writing a single musical note in the album, Francesc Messeguer came to the band with the idea of an album name (which would eventually become both the working title and final title of the album, A Brief Encounter With Myself) which led to the members of the band having several meetings to discuss potential concepts, lyrical themes, musical direction and even song titles. Before the band formally began composing the music, they already had song names and concepts for each of these songs clearly outlined, which made the music writing far more lyric/concept-oriented than any other of their previous works.

Release[edit]

A Brief Encounter With Myself was released digitally in all streaming platforms and music stores the 1st of February of 2018, with a physical release a couple of months later. Shortly after its release, Nación Progresiva labeled the album as the band's most ambitious and daring work to date.[3] [4]

Live performances[edit]

The band spent most of 2018 supporting the album with local concerts, some in pretty important venue such as Mexico City's very own El Circo Volador that saw them supporting Mexican progressive giants Agora and also supporting the great Australian progressive metal band Voyager later that year.
