A Journey to Kasi , is a 2023 Telugu drama road movie written and directed by Muni Kishna. It is produced under Varanasi Creations by Sridhar Varanasi, Doradla Balaji and is presented by K.P.Lokanatha. It has an ensemble cast of Chaitanya Rao Madadi, Alexander Salnikov, Priya Paluvayi, Katalyn Gowda, and baby Akshara. The film tells two parallel stories of Jack Weber, a Post Doctoral student on Hindu Vedantic Doctrine who embarks on a journey in pursuit of his guru Sankaratheertha and his relation with Swetha, whom he meets during his Journey to Kasi and the story of Sivananda who goes on a pilgrimage to Kasi along with his father, wife and daughter. How these two stories interlink forms the rest of the plot
The filming began in 2019 and continued through 2020 before it came to a halt due to COVID-19. The shooting resumed in 2021 after a prolonged delay owing to lockdowns across the country and finished production in 2022.[1][unreliable source?] It is slated for release on 6 January 2023.
The film was screened at various film festivals and was declared winner at Rameshwaram International Film Festival 2022 and Kollywood International Film Festival 2022.
Plot[edit]
Jack Weber, a post doctoral student on Hindu Vedanta Advaitham sets out on a journey across India in pursuit of his guru Sankaratheertha, whom he met five years ago. During his travel, Jack meets Swetha who is a prostitute and eventually develops feelings for her. They set out on a journey to Kasi. In a parallel story, Sambaiah, an old man requests his son Sivananda to take him on a pilgrimage to Kasi. On reaching Kasi, Sivananda receives a call from Lord Shiva and leaves all material pleasure and his family leaving behind wife Yashoda and his daughter Bujji.
What happens to the family of Sivananda? How is Swetha connected to Kasi? How these two stories interlink forms the twist and rest of the story.
Production[edit]
Filming began in 2019 and continued through 2020 with filming locations across Hyderabad, Varanasi. This movie is one of very few Telugu language films to have been extensively shot in Varanasi. The production got delayed due to COVID-19 and lockdowns that followed across India. The filming resumed and was finished in 2022.[2]The official trailer was released on 24 December 2022.
