A Shay Ta Khar A Win (Enter by the front door) is a drama novel by the writer Ponnya Khin[1]. It was published by the writer's own publishing house in 2016. A film adaptation, "Shwe Kyar", was released in 2018. The film received numerous awards, including Best Actress, Best Film Editing, and Best Screenplay. The book was on national bestseller lists for several months.

Plot Summary

The novel focuses on the life of Shwe Kyar, a young prostitute, and her struggles to be accepted by society. The name "Shwe Kyar" originated as a nickname given by friends due to her inability to do things promptly. Ponnya Khin conducted extensive research, spending months visiting night clubs and interviewing sex workers. While the book portrays the lives of sex workers, there is little to no profanity in the writing.

The novel also highlighted Myanmar's sex trade regulations and the role hotels play in the sex trade industry.

Controversy

Following the 2019 Myanmar Motion Picture Academy Awards, rumors about the story's originality spread on social networks. The movie's title, "Shwe Kyar," directly translates to "Golden Lotus," which is also the name of a Hong Kong film produced in 1974. The author clarified that this was a mere coincidence and that there was no resemblance in the plots.[2]
