A Township Tale is a VR multiplayer RPG developed by Australia-based dev studio Alta. The game was released on the Oculus Quest in July 2021, and is also available as an early access title for Microsoft Windows. Players choose from a variety of RPG classes and work together to restore an abandoned town that becomes their new home. Players then build weapons and equipment to venture out into the world to hunt for resources and treasure.
Gameplay
A Township Tale is a role-playing game with a heavy emphasis on crafting and survival mechanics. New players are dropped into a short tutorial where they learn the basics of how to move and interact with the world, then are left to fend for themselves as they discover how to build tools, find food, and make their own weapons and armor. Road to VR's Ben Lang described it as "Exploration is really the name of the game in A Township Tale, both of the world and mechanically. Very little is handed to you outright, and players need to work together to discover how it all works as they go. As you explore, you'll learn how to improve your crafting, learn new abilities, and even upgrade the town for everyone."[1]
Once players have found the town, they can then begin building equipment and specializing their characters. The game offers a variety of classes and abilities, which players can mix and match in different combinations. After players have made new weapons and gear, they can then go explore the world around the town, including a cave system full of monsters and treasure. The game then settles into a loop where players explore the caves to get better loot and crafting materials, which they can take back to upgrade the town to make better gear, which then lets them get deeper into the caves to find better resources.
Development
Development of the game began in 2016, with only three staff members. By 2018, the team had grown to nine staff members, and the project had joined Startup SydWest in 2018.[2] That year also saw the game release in an early access state on PCVR, where Alta continued to work on new content and bug fixes as players joined the community and began playing.[1] Soon, the project began to grow, with developer Alta regularly adding new features to the game and revealing them on the company's Youtube channel.[3]
The Oculus Quest version of the game was revealed on June 12th, 2021, and was the final game announced in the UploadVR E3 showcase.[4] The game launched on July 15th, 2021, with an exclusive pre-order outfit and toolbelt.[5]
