Aabid Ismail
Aabid Ismail (born 2001) is a Sri Lankan scrabble player known for winning the Wespa Youth Cup (formerly known as the World Youth Scrabble Championship) in 2017. [1] [2] [3] He is currently the player with the highest number of wins at a world youth scrabble championship, having won 20.5 games out of 24.
Ismail, who studied at Royal College, Colombo, has enjoyed the game since he was 13 years old, and has developed his skills through his school's scrabble club. [4] Royal College is known for producing some of the world's finest scrabble players. For example, Janul De Silva from Royal College was the runner-up at the 2017 World Youth Scrabble Championship and the under-16 champion. [5] [6] Furthermore, since 2006, the Sri Lankan youth scrabble team has consistently included at least one player from Royal College. [7] [8] [9]
Other Achievements
Aabid Ismail also won three awards at the 2016 World Youth Scrabble Championship in Lille, France: second runner-up, under-16 champion, and highest word score. [10] Aabid Ismail has also been a three-time finalist at the Sri Lankan National Scrabble Championship, and won it once in 2017. [11] [12] [13]
