Aamer Saeed Bhatti[1] (Urdu: عامر سعید بھٹی; born 10 September 1964) is a Pakistani organic chemist and academic who serves as a tenured Professor of Chemistry at Quaid-I-Azam University (QAU) [2], Islamabad, Pakistan. He previously served as the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at QAU, holding the chairmanship from 2021 to 2024.
Bhatti is recognized for his contributions to synthetic bioorganic and medicinal chemistry, particularly in the areas of heterocyclic chemistry and natural product synthesis. He has authored more than 620 peer-reviewed research publications, contributed 11 international book chapters, published two books, and holds seven international patents. Over the course of his academic career, he has supervised more than 72 M.Phil./M.Sc. and 28 Ph.D. students.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Pakistan[3], and a Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences[4]. In recognition of his scientific impact, he has been listed among the world's top 2% most-cited scientists by Stanford University & Elsevier[5] in both 2020 and 2022.
Education
Aamer Saeed Bhatti obtained his M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, in 1986, where he conducted research on the chemical constituents of the plant Ipomoea carnea under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Naeema Khan. He pursued further studies at the same institution, completing an M.Phil. in Organic Chemistry in 1988, with a thesis focused on the development of synthetic methodologies toward the Isochroman system, contributing to the study of fungal metabolites.
In 1994, Bhatti earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Quaid-i-Azam University under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Nasim H. Rama. His doctoral research, conducted from 1987 to 1994 as part of projects funded by the National Science Research and Development Board (NSRDB) and the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), involved the synthesis of naturally occurring compounds such as isocoumarins and dihydroisocoumarins.
Between 1994 and 1995, Bhatti undertook postdoctoral research at Quaid-i-Azam University, focusing on the total synthesis of feralolide, a biologically active natural product. He was later awarded two Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowships in 2001 and 2020, which enabled him to conduct research at the Institute für Organische Chemie, Universität Hannover, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Markus Kalesse. His research there included the total synthesis of cytotoxic polyketides such as Ratjadone and Callystatin A.

Aamer Saeed Bhatti's research encompasses a wide range of topics within synthetic bioorganic and medicinal chemistry, with particular focus on natural products and heterocyclic compounds. In the field of organic electronics, Bhatti has developed compounds based on carbazole, fluorene, and perylene for applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). His work includes the synthesis and photophysical characterization of fluorescent dye classes such as Rylene, Rylene azo-hybrids, porphyrins, xanthenes, anthocyanins, and triarylmethanes, including compounds with aggregate-induced emission (AIE) properties.
Bhatti has also promoted green chemistry through the development of eco-friendly synthetic methodologies, including one-pot multi-component reactions, microwave-assisted synthesis, aqueous-phase synthesis, and mechanochemical approaches.
His discoveries include numerous small-molecule and hybrid enzyme inhibitors with activity surpassing standard drugs, as well as novel therapeutic agents aimed at multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens, with emphasis on structure–transport relationships. Furthermore, his research has contributed to the development of in vivo bioimaging cancer probes, ion sensors, and materials for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).

Aamer Saeed Bhatti has held various academic and research positions throughout his career, spanning over three decades. He joined Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) in 2002 and currently serves as a tenured Professor of Chemistry.
